There might not be a lot going on as far as senior recruits is going at Newcastle at the moment, but there is work going on behind the scenes to ensure the future is bright.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have scouted “special” goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu from Shamrock Rovers and have already agreed a contract for Swiss striker Yannick Toure.

The 17-year-old striker is set t0 be announced later in the summer according to the Chronicle, although he is already listed as a Newcastle player on reliable website Transfermarkt.

He arrives on a free transfer from BSC Young Boys after an impressive run of 23 goals in 23 games in the Swiss U18 Elite League.

Newcastle are also interested in bringing in 17-year-old striker David Strelec from Slovan Bratislava.

OPINION

It’s been another slow summer for Newcastle fans. They might not be surprised by the lack of transfer action, but they will be angry. Angry at Mike Ashley, who is still in control of the club’s coffers after takeover talks fell through, and angry that they might be set to start the new season without a new striker. Thankfully, things are much better in the Under-23s, and progress has already been made at revamping the future of the Newcastle first-team after a clear-out. Toure is a player who could quickly catch the eye at Newcastle. The 6ft 1in youngster is a prolific striker who has already been capped by Switzerland Under-17s. He can play as an out-and-out striker or on either flank and this versatility, plus his calmness in front of goal, has marked him out as a talent of the future. Bagging him for free is a significant move for Newcastle, although he probably won’t be challenging for the senior team this season unless something goes disastrously wrong for Benitez.
