Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is desperate to secure at least one more signing before the squad fly to Portugal at the end of the week, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper report that Benitez is hopeful of making progress on at least one deal within the next few days as he looks to fill in important positions.

The Chronicle report that talks over a deal for West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon are set to continue, while the club are also weighing up a bid for Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar.

Kenedy, Ki Sung-Yueng and Martin Dubravka are the club’s three signings so far this summer.

OPINION

Getting in another signing before the end of the week will be a massive result for Benitez and Newcastle considering the corner he is being boxed into by club bosses. Benitez is being given no room to work this window and he will have to work miracles if Newcastle are to improve on their tenth-place finish from last term. A deal by the end of this week would mean two new arrivals would be on the club’s tour of Portugal, and that would allow them to settle nicely before the start of the season. It would also alleviate a lot of the pressure that is building around Benitez to do some more business. A signing this week would leave Benitez 10 days or so to finish off his summer recruitment, and that is more than enough time to bring in one or two more players. At this point in time the Rondon deal looks most likely, but their recent interest in Schar could see a deal for the Swiss defender move along quickly.
