Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign Guingamp midfielder Clement Grenier, according to L’Equipe.

The French newspaper, as translated by Sport Witness, claim that the Magpies are one of three Premier League clubs interested in the 27-year-old France international, with Everton and Fulham being the other parties.

Guingamp are said to be priming Grenier to leave after just half a season at the Brittany club, with their manager now reluctant to play the pass master in their pre-season matches in case an injury wrecks their chances of a decent fee.

OPINION

A deal to bring in Grenier would be a masterstroke from Rafa Benitez as he operates on a limited budget once again this summer. There are few international level midfielders that would be available for the club to bring in this summer, so if they were able to secure a deal for the France midfielder it would be a huge coup for the Magpies. Grenier was in brilliant form for Ligue 1 minnows Guingamp last season after his free transfer from Lyon in January, scoring five goals and laying on four assists in 15 appearances for the Brittany club. That kind of form from midfield would be perfect for Newcastle, who need reinforcements in that area. Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame formed a brilliant partnership last season, but there is a lack of quality alternatives, and Grenier would most definitely push those two for a starting berth if he was to join the Magpies.
