Newcastle United are interested in signing midfield destroyer Giannelli Imbula this summer from English rivals Stoke City, according to SRF Sport.

The news outlet claims that the Magpies and Crystal Palace are interested in the 25-year-old, who will now return to Stoke after their relegation from the Premier League after spending the season out on loan with Toulouse.

It is understood that the in-demand enforcer is also attracting interest from the likes of Galatasaray and Torino, but would prefer a move to France.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle could do with bolstering their options in the centre of the park and Imula is somebody that could be direct competition for powerhouse Mohamed Diame.

However, he has failed to really make a big impression during his time with Stoke and looks far more settled when competing in his homeland France.

Rafael Bentiez should be keen to get his summer business underway and needs to try find players that can hit the ground running at St James’ Park, something that Imbula could perhaps struggle to do.

Likely to happen?

Imbula will surely be on his way out of Stoke as they prepare for life in the Championship, but a switch to Newcastle seems a long shot at this present moment and the report details he wants to return to France.
