OPINION
Young, talented and reared in the north-east, Newcastle fans will be eager for Charman, Roberts and Gilliead to extend their associations with the club and demonstrate their quality by breaking into the first team. There are few things supporters like more than home-grown stars who come good. Roberts, 21, and Charman, 20, were regulars in the recently completed domestic season for Newcastle Under-23s in Premier League 2, while Gilliead, 22, spent the campaign on loan at League One side Bradford City. The oldest of the forward trio was a mainstay of the starting XI, with 42 of his 48 appearances coming from the start. Can they cut it at Newcastle and progress into the first team? They certainly have some way to go, but time is also on their side, although they might all need to benefit from season-long loans next season at Football League clubs, where the standard and pressure is far greater than in youth team football.
