Newcastle United are in pursuit of Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as manager Rafa Benitez steps up his stopper search, according to the Mirror

The newspaper report that the 26-year-old colossus, who stands at 6ft 5in tall, would be available for around £2million this summer.

The Mirror claim that Mendy is seen as one of the most underrated goalkeepers in France, having kept 17 clean sheets in 31 matches this season, conceding just 19 goals in the process as Reims earned promotion to Ligue 1.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Yes.

It is looking highly likely that the Magpies will sign Martin Dubravka on a permanent deal this summer, with the Slovakian slotting straight in as their number one in goal.

Mendy would be a more-than-able deputy for Dubravka, with the Guinea-Bissau international coming off the season of his life in Ligue 2 with Reims.

A £2million deal also means that Mendy is highly affordable, and that would go down well among the stingy Newcastle hierarchy.

Likely to happen?

The report seems to suggest that West Ham are in pole position to sign Mendy, but Newcastle also seem to be in a good place in the hunt.

Benitez is said to be stepping up his search for a new goalkeeper, and that would seem to suggest that bids will start to go in for potential incomings soon.

One thing that is surely for certain here is that Mendy will be on his way this summer, with the 26-year-old sure to have plenty of suitors following such an impressive season.
