Three things for Rafa Benitez to ponder before Newcastle take on Everton

|

Is it time for Slimani?

Slimani’s impact off the bench against Arsenal was a major factor in the 2-1 victory that kept Newcastle in the top-half, providing the assist for Matt Ritchie’s decisive goal at St James’ Park.

This was the Algerian striker’s second substitute appearance since joining from Leicester on loan in January and his effect in those games has been profound, being involved in two match-winning goals.

His powerful header opened up the chance for Ritchie to score against the Gunners, whilst his aerial presence was enough to distract Huddersfield’s goalkeeper in the seconds before Ayoze Perez struck in a late 1-0 win.

With five games remaining for the 29-year-old to impress, Benitez may decide to hand Slimani his first start in a black and white shirt at the expense of Dwight Gayle, whose return of two goals 17 games is a concern despite his positive contributions in recent weeks.
