Newcastle United have surpassed expectations this season with fine performances under the guidance of Rafael Benitez, who has guided the Magpies to a top-half position in the table with four matches to play.

It hasn’t all been easy for the Tyneside giants though and it’s taken time for the Magpies to assert themselves back in the top-flight, leading Jacob Murphy to reveal he has mixed feelings about his first season at St. James’ Park.

Speaking to NUFC TV, Murphy stated he still has plenty to prove at Newcastle:

“I have enjoyed it. It has been a learning curve this first year with Newcastle but I’m delighted with the way things have gone. We’re safe now. I have improved a lot and tactically I can only get better. I know there is more to come. It is about growing and continuing to learn.”

“It has been frustrating in the essence that I want to play and be out there. I scored that goal and I felt I was in good form but on the other hand the boys have been playing really well. It’s a team game and I know when the boys are playing well they will be in.”

“It’s a squad game. Every day is a learning day and the boys have been working hard. If I am not working hard on the training pitch, one I am not getting better and two I’m not helping the team practice hard so I know I have a role to do.”

Murphy, 23, has started just 11 Premier League matches this season, making a further ten appearances from the bench and scoring one goal.
