Newcastle United fans have endured a difficult period over the past few years and things remain in a difficult position, with the Magpies fighting against relegation and also having a battle off the field in regards to potential takeovers.

It’s been a frustrating period for the club, with it revealed earlier this week that discussions between Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley have broken down, and it means the period of uncertainty continues- which is a major concern.

Ashley has previously been reluctant to invest in the squad and there is a danger that could continue to be the case during this month’s window. However, he’d be shooting himself in the foot as the risk of relegation is real and the value of Newcastle would plummet if they were to return to the Championship.

For that reason, there’s a bit more optimism that Ashley could invest in the final week of the transfer window and a number of high profile targets have been reportedly, most recently in the form of Borussia Dortmund’s Andre Schurrle and Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro.

The former would likely arrive on-loan, whilst a permanent deal for Gameiro would be likely to eclipse the club-record fee paid for Michael Owen 13 years ago, but it would be a stern statement of intent that the North East side are looking to rise once again.

Both are experienced internationals, with Schurrle having won the World Cup, and both are looking to rejuvenate their careers after falling down the pecking order at their respective sides- and Newcastle are the ideal club for them to make an impact.

Like the pair, Newcastle are looking to find stable footing once again and this pair would help them cement that, certainly providing the boost that would likely see them retain their Premier League status and avoid relegation.

Newcastle can fund the moves with departures, with a potential exit for Jonjo Shelvey and Aleksander Mitrovic providing funds and movement in the wage budget, so there’s certainly a chance for both deals to be finalised in the final week of the window.
