Newcastle United face a testing final week of the January transfer window, as Rafael Benitez looks to rejuvenate his side ahead of the battle that lies ahead.

The Magpies have struggled to assert themselves following their return to the Premier League and the Spanish boss is desperate to improve his ranks in the market, with one area of his focus being in the final third.

Newcastle have only scored 22 goals in 23 matches so far this season and changes are afoot for the front line, with Serbian striker Aleksander Mitrovic likely to be on the way out- although one advance for his signature has been rejected.

The Evening Chronicle states Newcastle have rejected a bid from Premier League relegation rivals Brighton, with the offer not meeting the Magpies’ valuation of £15m for the 23-year-old forward.

Newcastle do not want to experience a loss on a player they paid £13m for and they’re also unlikely to sanction a departure until a replacement has been secured, with Benitez eyeing a number of potential targets from across the continent.

It’s unlikely to be the end of the saga, although Newcastle seem to have made it clear to Brighton exactly what they’re looking for.
