Newcastle United are struggling to keep their head above water this season in their return to the Premier League and a key problem area has been in front of goal, where the Magpies have scored just 22 goals in 23 matches.

Remarkably, it’s now 13 years since Newcastle United parted with a club-record sum of £16m to bring England international Michael Owen back to English football from Real Madrid- and that piece of business occurred prior to Mike Ashley’s reign.

Clearly, a new big name signing is long overdue and Newcastle would certainly benefit from splashing the cash on another striker this month- and smashing the club transfer record would be a real statement of intent from Mike Ashley’s side.

Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro is a name being widely linked with a move to the North East and he certainly fits the bill, with the Spanish side looking to complete a permanent sale of the 30-year-old French striker this month.

A fee in the region of £15m or more would likely persuade the La Liga giants into a deal and Newcastle ay have the funds available for a move, with reports stating that Ashley is finally ready to hand Benitez the spending money he is looking for.

Not only would signing Gameiro be a boost on the field, it would also provide a significant boost off it as it would raise optimism surrounding the club and would show that they’re not afraid to make exciting movements in the transfer market.
