Newcastle United are desperately looking to improve their ranks this month as they seek to fend off the threat of relegation and to retain their Premier League status.

The Magpies have found consistency an issue so far this season and Rafael Benitez has identified the areas of his squad that he feels can be improved upon, one of which is between the sticks where neither Rob Elliot or Karl Darlow have provided confidence.

Spanish outletĀ Don BalonĀ states Benitez has already made moves to improve his options in this position, stating that the Magpies have lodged an enquiry with Real Madrid for the services of Spanish international Kiko Casilla.

The 31-year-old is likely to be pushed further down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu this month with the defending European champions poised to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.

Casilla has long been second fiddle to Costa Rican international Keylor Navas during his spell in the Spanish capital and may consider an exit this month to improve his first-team opportunities.
