Newcastle United are set for a crucial month in January as Rafael Benitez seeks to secure additions to his squad that can maintain the club’s Premier League status.

The Magpies have found consistency hard to come by since winning promotion back to the top-tier after clinching the Championship title last season and sit just two points above the relegation zone, having handed themselves a huge boost with a narrow victory over fellow strugglers Stoke City on New Year’s Day.

Benitez’s priority this month is to improve his attacking options for the remainder of the season and The Northern Echo states crucial approaches have been made already, with bids submitted for Liverpool’s Danny Ings and Leicester City’s Islam Slimani.

Newcastle are now awaiting a response from their fellow Premier League sides, after making an approach to sign the pair on-loan for the remainder of the season- with both linked with a move during this month’s window.

Ings is looking for regular football after a lengthy injury lay-off, whilst Slimani has struggled to find his feet since joining Leicester City in 2016.
