Newcastle United are poised for a frantic and potentially exciting end to the January transfer window, with Rafael Benitez looking to significantly bolster his side.

The Magpies landed their first recruit of the January window this week with the capture of Brazilian starlet Kenedy on-loan from Chelsea and another exciting loan addition could be secured before the end of the window.

ESPN report that Newcastle and West Brom are battling it out on the market to land the services of Borussia Dortmund’s versatile World Cup winner Andre Schurrle on-loan, though the German side may prefer a permanent sale.

The former Chelsea man had found his feet back in German football but has struggled to secure regular opportunities for Dortmund this season, which is a concern for the player as he seeks to cement his spot in the national side for this summer’s World Cup.

Schurrle joined Dortmund from Wolfsburg in 2016 for a club-record £30m but has failed to replicate the form he showed at his previous side, with the German giants now looking to recoup as much of that fee as possible with a sale.

Newcastle would certainly benefit from the addition of Schurrle but it remains to be seen whether they’d sanction a permanent deal, with the Magpies already looking to part with a club-record fee to land a new forward.
