Forgotten Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback is in talks with Championship side Nottingham Forest about a deadline day move.

Colback hasn’t feature for the Magpies all season and was banished to train with the club’s Academy side after manager Rafa Benitez made it clear the Killingworth-born midfielder wasn’t part of his first-team plans this season.

The 28-year-old, a free transfer signing from local rivals Sunderland in 2014, has played in just a handful of games for the under-23 side but could now be offered the chance to resurrect his career with Forest according to the Shields Gazzette.

Former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka is in charge at the City Ground and is reportedly keen to add Colback to his squad, although it’s unclear at this stage if the deal being discussed will be permanent or a loan until the end of the season.

Colback’s departure would free up significant funds for Benitez as the Spaniard aims to add a striker and goalkeeper to his ranks before the transfer window closes, with deals for Leicester forward Islam Slimani and Sparta Prague’s Martin Dubravka reportedly close.
