Newcastle have agreed to let Aleksandar Mitrovic re-join former club Anderlecht on loan after striking a deal with Leicester for Islam Slimani.

Sky Sports are reporting that Mitrovic, who fell out of favour with Magpies boss Rafa Benitez and has not started a Premier League game all season, will move back to Belgium until the end of the season after three years on Tyneside during which he became a huge fan favourite despite a poor disciplinary record.

The Serbia international, who was the subject of an £8 million bid from Brighton last week, will be replaced by Slimani with Newcastle fending off interest from West Ham and Monaco to secure the 29-year-old’s signature on a short-term deal which will reportedly incur a £2 million loan fee.

However, the Algeria international won’t be available until mid-February after picking up a thigh injury. Newcastle were understood to have been targeting a permanent deal before the setback with reports suggesting the Magpies were prepared to fork out a club record £20 million for Slimani.
