Newcastle United may have an intriguing deal to mull over as reports state a Championship side will move for a Magpies striker.

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons has stated on Twitter that Fulham are currently deciding on whether to cash in on highly-rated midfielder Tom Cairney, who has been subject to a £15m bid from West Brom.

Should Cairney be allowed to leave Craven Cottage, then Fulham will reignite their interest in Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle- a player they unsuccessfully tried to bring to West London in the summer after lodging a £15m bid.

27-year-old Gayle was excellent in the Championship for Newcastle last season but has struggled to find consistency in the Premier League this season, which has led Rafael Benitez to seek his own attacking signings.

Whilst losing Gayle would significantly reduce the depth that Newcastle have at their disposal, and he would certainly need to be replaced, a sale this month would raise significant funds for Benitez’s own January plans.

Benitez is keen to sign a goalkeeper and a new striker in the winter window, as well as bolstering his left-side defensively.
