Newcastle United are still to add to their squad in the January transfer window, despite Rafael Benitez’s intentions to finish his spending in the mid-season by the 20th.
That self imposed deadline now seems impossible to meet and pressure is on Newcastle, and Mike Ashley in particular, to finance the necessary moves to push the Magpies away from the relegation zone- a position they’re currently just three points above.
Benitez’s priority this month is to sign a new goalkeeper, providing a huge boost defensively, but all of the talk so far has orientated around those based on the continent- including Paris Saint-Germain’s Kevin Trapp and Napoli’s Pepe Reina.
Both approaches have proved not to be fruitful, which means Newcastle may have to reassess their priorities, and looking to sign a goalkeeper from within the Premier League would be a solid move- especially with the World Cup on the horizon, which would provide a boost in negotiations.
