Newcastle United face a crucial week ahead to end the January transfer window, as they seek to secure the additions that can help them cement their Premier League status.

The Magpies have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring just 22 goals in 23 matches this season, and Rafael Benitez is desperate to improve his forward lines with a capture of a top-class signing.

A number of names have been mentioned but Newcastle seem to have set their sights on a final target and, crucially, have been given the go ahead to secure a move.

According to The Daily ExpressNewcastle owner Mike Ashley has approved a move for Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro and is ready to spend big to lure the 30-year-old French striker to St. James’ Park this week.

Crucially, Benitez has the ability to equal or even eclipse the club’s current record signing, which stands at the £16m paid to bring Michael Owen back to the Premier League 13 years ago- a deal that occurred before Benitez took charge.

A fee for Gameiro is likely to be a similar figure and the news is a massive boost to the club, who remain on the market with Ashley keen to sell.
