Newcastle United have been handed a potential blow in the transfer market with the news that a Premier League rival has reportedly made the first move for a prime target in January.

Reports in Turkish state that relegation threatened Crystal Palace have made a move to sign Champions League striker Cenk Tosun in January from Besiktas, after his stellar form has helped the Turkish side advance to the knock-out stages of Europe’s elite competition.

Interest in Tosun is believed to be high and Newcastle face a wealth of competition in the battle for his signature, with the news that the Eagles seem to have made the first move potentially handing a huge blow to Rafael Benitez’s side.

The Spanish manager is keen to bolster his attacking options in the New Year but may face limitations due to the ongoing takeover talk, which shows no signs of completion before the January transfer window opens.

As such, current owner Mike Ashley could keep a cap on the spending in January- and Newcastle could then be blown out of the water in the quest to land Tosun.
