Newcastle United are interested in signing Fulham star Tom Cairney this January, reports the Northern Echo.

The Magpies have had a long standing interest in the midfielder and saw bids as high as £20 million rejected for Cairney by the Cottagers during the summer, however manager Rafael Benitez is expected to go in again for the 26-year-old after the New Year.

The Scotland international, who signed a new four-year-contract at Craven Cottage during the summer, has endured a difficult start to the season through injury making just seven appearances.

With Fulham currently residing in 17th place in the Championship and dangerously close to the relegation spots, it could be they are willing to part ways with the Scot in order to raise funds to strengthen their squad to help ensure their second flight status.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has already produced a list of players and positions he would like to recruit during January as he looks to bolster his squad, and is expected to invest regardless of the club’s ownership with a takeover looming.
