Newcastle United scouts are in Germany as they look ahead to January transfer window, reports the Chronicle.

Having completed a fine piece of business during the summer – acquiring the services of Borussia Dortmund star Mikel Merino for only £6 million – the Magpies are thought to be looking to repeat that feat this winter.

Scouts have reportedly been taking a good look at a number of thus far un-named Bundesliga targets as Rafael Benitez looks to strengthen his squad this January.

The Spaniard was left frustrated with his club’s lack of business during the summer, however after a solid start to the new season, such frustrations have dampened.

Benitez however insists he is still looking to spend after the New Year in order to add strength in depth to his squad.

“We’re watching players but that’s it, nothing else. We have to concentrate on our football now.” said Benitez.

“Our scouting department are out there and we are watching a lot of players.

“You can’t stop agents talking or clubs talking who want to put players on the market, but there is no target we are currently talking to. We are monitoring a lot of players.”
