Emotional connection partly keeping Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United

It proved to be a terrible transfer window for Newcastle United, who failed to bring anyone in over the course of deadline day.

Indeed, their inactivity in the market came amid a backdrop of suggestions Rafa Benitez was unhappy with proceedings on Tyneside and fears he’d walk out on the Toon Army.

While the Spaniard’s long-term future is in doubt, reports from the Shields Gazette have suggested no immediate parting of ways is close.

They claim Benitez WON’T quit Newcastle imminently due to an emotional connection with the fans, along with the fact he’d have to pay between £5-6m to sever ties right now.

However, that could all change if an interested party was to pay his release clause and the 57-year-old has been touted as a potential target for West Ham United.

It’d be hard to blame Benitez, popular as he is at St. James’ Park. A clear lack of investment is not what he signed up for, giving him little chance of making the club competitive once more.
