Back-to-back runners-up
In 1996 and 1997, Newcastle United came the closest they have ever done to winning the first division title for seventy years as the Magpies finished runners-up to Manchester United on both occasion- also earning their place in the Champions League, Europe’s elite competition.
The North East giants have not finished higher since, with their best finish following those years coming in third place in the 2002/03 season, and two relegations have followed since Shepherd ended his association with the club- which shows just how stable they were beforehand.
