As revealed by Tancredi Palmeri on Twitter, Newcastle United have been contacted by Benfica over a potential deal for outcast goalkeeper, Tim Krul.

The Dutchman is the club’s longest serving player, though is understood to have been frozen out under Rafa Benitez, following his return from a loan spell back in his native Holland. Indeed, the 29-year-old wasn’t handed a squad number as the Magpies prepare for their return to the Premier League.

Benfica recently sold Ederson to Manchester City and are in need of a new custodian, with Krul thought to have emerged as an option over in the Portuguese capital. Though the Oranje star has little hope of a future on Tyneside, he did pen a new deal only last year, so the club are in a relatively strong position when it comes to negotiating.

Krul may be out of the picture at St. James’ Park, though remains a relatively solid shot stopper and someone who would have been involved in his national side, were it not for his injuries.
