Newcastle are the latest club linked with George Hirst.

According to a report in The Chronicle the teenage Sheffield Wednesday striker is being watched closely by Rafa Benitez’s scouting team.

Hirst, whose dad was a prolific striker at Wednesday in the early nineties, made his top team debut last December and has already attracted a £1m bid from Leicester City that was promptly rejected by the Wednesday board of directors.

The 18 year old scored four times as England won the end of season Toulon tournament and is being watched closely by a number of top clubs.

Benitez is keen to give upcoming talent a chance and could offer Hirst a better chance of Premier League football than is available elsewhere.

With a year left on his Hillsborough contract Wednesday will have to come up with a new deal that meets the striker’s expectations or cash in on one of their brightest prospects in years.
