Mikel Merino is expected to complete his transfer to Newcastle today.
According to a report in The Chronicle a number of German sources are claiming that the details for the Borussia Dortmund midfielders deal were completed overnight.
A season long loan with a buy out option is expected to be announced which provides all parties with what they are looking for.
Merino moved to Dortmund a year ago from Osasuna but struggled to make an impact in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund were in no rush to move the 21-year-old on but the offer from Newcastle gives the player a chance to get some games under his belt and protects their investment.
Rafa Benitez has known of the player since his success in the Spanish u-19 side at the 2015 European Championships.
Merino becomes the first midfielder to be added to the Newcastle squad although he will have to play his way into the side.
