Javier Manquillo is on the brink of signing for Newcastle United.
According to a report on the Shields Gazette the Atletico Madrid defender has undergone a medical ahead of completing his move.
Manquillo spent last season on loan at Sunderland and although they were relegated Rafa Benitez believes that the 23-year-old can be an asset in Newcastle’s return to the Premier League.
With a pedigree that includes Spanish u-21 caps and a loan spell at Liverpool the Newcastle boss is confident that he can get the best out of a player who came through the ranks at Atletico.
Benitez has stated that his preference is to buy players with experience of the Premier League with a £4m deal for Manquillo coming in at way below the Premier League average.
Despite his time at Sunderland Manquillo had no hesitation about joining Newcastle and agreed to fly to Ireland to join up with the squad in pre-season training.
