Daryl Murphy looks set to join Nottingham Forest with the move funded by Middlebrough.
After selling Britt Assombalonga to ‘Boro for £15m Mark Warburton is ready to spend £2.5m of that fee to bring Murphy to the City Ground according to a report in The Chronicle.
Two days ago the striker spoke about his hopes of playing in the Premier League but a return to the Championship seems on the cards with Forest beating Aston Villa and Sunderland to the signing.
Newcastle signed Murphy a year ago from Ipswich in a £4m deal to provide back up to Dwight Gayle.
Rafa Benitez praised the Irishman’s contribution on and off the pitch but admitted that a move would probably be best for the player and the club.
Murphy has always taken a pragmatic view to his career enjoying three stints at Ipswich as well as spells at Celtic and Sunderland before arriving at Newcastle.
