As Rafa Benitez tries to make sense of the crazy transfer market he may pause to think back to one deal last summer when Newcastle cashed in on the crazy market.

Moussa Sissoko.

Not since Liverpool wrote out a cheque for £35m to sign Andy Carroll has there been such joy in the boardroom at St James’ Park.

After an unconvincing season that saw Newcastle relegated Sissoko headed home to France to prepare for the European Championships.

The great circus worked in Newcastle’s favour with the midfielder turning in more consistently impressive performances than he had mustered in the entire domestic season.

As the transfer window closed Everton were furious at missing out on £30m rated Sissoko, Spurs felt that they had won a watch but the real winners were Newcastle.

While Benitez comes to terms with the crazy market it is worth bearing in mind that it is a two way street – Newcastle can offload players into the market that valued Sissoko at £30m less than a year ago.
