The £13m journeyman

How on earth can a £13m transfer fee be justified for Lisandro Lopez?

Media reports across the board today have quoted Lopez and team-mate Andreas Samaris as being priced as a £26m package with both players being of equal value.

Lopez has been at Benfica for three seasons and completed 28 matches, in the season just ended he made eight first team appearances.

English football is often accused of being highly inflated but there aren’t many 27 year old bit part players commanding fees of £13m.

Lopez’s CV is nothing spectacular, he is a better than average Argentinian journeyman who has never been close to the top level in the game.

When he left the Argentinian Arsenal it was Getafe that gave him a route into Europe, after one season in La Liga his career has stalled at Benfica.

Newcastle transfer problems are getting a public airing but surely spending £13m on Lopez will sent out the wrong message for future transfer bids.
