Scunthorpe United manager Neil Alexander has given forward Ivan Toney credit for his impact on the League One club since he arrived on loan from Newcastle in the January transfer window.

The 21 year old spent the first half of the season on loan at Shrewsbury Town where he scored seven goals in 27 appearances before he switched to Glanford Park at the beginning of the year.

Toney initially struggled at Scunthorpe, and was benched for most of February, but he has come back to the fore in recent weeks, scoring five goals in five games,

He scored twice in the 3-1 win over Chesterfield on Monday helping the League One side seal a playoff spot. Alexander told Scunthorpe’s official website that his first goal was something special:

“Ivan’s first goal was an unbelievable, towering header against a goalkeeper of that size. His first showed a desire to win that ball and score. It’s great for him but he knows as well as anybody else that it’s about the whole team.”

Scunthorpe can still determine where they finish in the playoff picture, and their last two matches will be against relegation threatened Swindon Town and already relegated Coventry City.
