Former Manchester City academy youth player Mace Goodridge says he has ambitions to quickly make the step up to Newcastle’s first team in the near future.

The Chronicle say the 17 year old, who joined from City after being released last summer, will be promoted to the Magpies’ Under 23 side next season but the central midfielder has set his ambitions even higher than that. He told the club programme (quotes via the Chronicle):

“Hopefully, this summer I can train with the Under-23s again and show what I’ve got. I’d like to get myself into the first team eventually.”

Goodridge has featured for Newcastle in the FA Youth Cup. He came on as a second half substitute in the 4-3 fifth round victory over Sunderland back in January.

He did enough to impress the Under 18 coaches to get a start in the next round against strongly fancied Tottenham. He started the sixth round encounter against Spurs but was substituted 13 minutes from time as the Magpies went down to a 5-3 defeat.

Goodridge was interesting Premier League champions Leicester City but Newcastle were able to snap up the player on a free transfer before any of their rivals. His next task will be to impress Under 23s manager Peter Beardsley next season.
