Former Newcastle coach and caretaker manager John Carver says he believes that the Magpies have all but sealed promotion to the Premier League already.

Huddersfield Town have a game in hand over Newcastle but are still ten points behind heading into the last five games of the season, and Carver told the the Yorkshire Evening Post that he doesn’t expect Rafa Benitez’s side to slip up now:

“It’s never done until the table says so but Newcastle have got enough points to get over the line now. I feel the same about Leeds. It’s another result or two to be certain but, realistically, I don’t see it going wrong for either of them.”

Newcastle face Leeds at St James Park on Friday evening, but Huddersfield will have already played their match against Preston North End earlier in the day.

If the Terriers come out with a win, it will put some extra pressure on the Magpies to put in a performance to reassert themselves as favourites for promotion. If David Wagner’s side lose though, it would leave Newcastle on the brink of promotion. Whatever happens, the clash against Leeds will be one of the defining matches of the season.
