Newcastle reportedly saved almost £1million in compensation when former manager Steve McClaren was appointed Derby County head coach in October, according to the Daily Mail.

When they sacked the former Middlesbrough and FC Twente boss in March last year, the Magpies compensation package for sacking McClaren was paid in instalments, and it turns out the club only paid a small percentage of the amount before he became Derby manager for his second spell in charge.

Derby subsequently sacked McClaren for a second time last month after losing 3-0 to Brighton, almost a year to to the day he had been sacked as manager of Newcastle.

The Rams had been on a run of just two wins in ten matches which had seen them slip out of playoff contention. In addition to likely missing out on promotion once again this season, it now falls to Derby to pay McClaren compensation after his sacking, rather than the Magpies.
