Former Newcastle star Mick Quinn has backed Newcastle to see off Birmingham City at the weekend after beating them twice already this season.

Answering questions in a Q&A on the Chronicle‘s website, Quinn said he believes that the fact that the Blues have dropped down the table since the appointment of Gianfranco Zola as manager suggests a good win is likely for the Magpies on Saturday afternoon:

“I think this Newcastle side are more naturally suited to playing away from home – and I honestly believe Birmingham are there for the taking. This Blues side have massively gone backwards under Gianfranco Zola. Newcastle have already beaten Birmingham twice this season and I think that they will head down to St Andrew’s and put them to the sword again.”

Newcastle thrashed Birmingham 4-0 in December while they also faced them twice in the FA Cup. A 1-1 draw in the first match at St Andrews led to a 3-1 home victory for the Magpies in the replay.

Since then, Zola’s side have won just two matches against Fulham and Wolves. They have slumped to 17th in the table and are in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle with Birmingham just six points off the drop zone.

Newcastle will be hoping that their good away form continues. The Magpies haven’t lost away since the 3-0 away defeat to Oxford United in the FA Cup back in late January, and you have to go back to January 2nd when they last lost away in the league against Blackburn.
