According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United’s chase of Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley could be faced with an unwelcome blow.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to St. James’ Park after falling down the pecking order under Ronald Koeman on Merseyside, though the Toffees will reportedly only look to shift him on a permanent basis.

That could prove difficult for the Magpies, who are only thought to be exploring the possibility of a loan move for the ex-Manchester United and England ace.

Cleverley is also understood to have attracted interest from Premier League sides such as Burnley and Watford as his career at Goodison Park continues to stall.

Rafa Benitez’s Toon Army are desperate for some more creativity as they chase a quick-fire promotion back to the Premier League, with only the suspended Jonjo Shelvey looking like a dangerous central midfielder right now.

The Everton man would go some way into helping on that front, though a deal looks to be complicated.
