While engaging with fellow users on Twitter, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has given his take on how he believes Newcastle United’s January transfer window will play out.

Naturally, the Magpies are linked with players from up and down the country as Rafa Benitez tries to lead the Toon Army back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

One of the latest names to be linked with a move to St. James’ Park is Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney, while Nottingham Forest ace Ben Osborn is another to be mooted as a potential target.

However, Downie has played down the chances of the Magpies signing players from the Championship on a permanent basis, while suggesting the Cottagers would have no interest in a deal of that ilk.

That’s surely a promising sign for the club’s fans as Newcastle look to bring in a higher standard of player, though perhaps convincing them to drop down into the second tier could prove difficult.
