While La Liga side Sporting Gijon are thought to be keen on a move for Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote, the Shields Gazette have claimed a money-spinning move to China for the Ivorian should not be ruled out.

As the Ivorian continues to wind down his deal at St. James’ Park, his rare outing against Birmingham City in the FA Cup last weekend looks increasingly like his last game in a Toon career that has spanned almost seven years.

A move to Spain had said to have been discussed, though this report suggests the 30-year-old is still hopeful of a move to the Far East, despite seeing a move to CSL side Shanghai Shenhua break down almost a year ago now.

A number of English-based talents have recently been making lucrative moves to the Chinese Super League as they continue to splash the cash and Tiote is believed to be keen on the idea of a move as his time on Tyneside comes to a close.

Previously a huge part of the Magpies’ squad under Alan Pardew, the emergence of more dynamic options in the midfield areas have pushed the former FC Twente man further down the pecking order.
