According to the Daily Express, Newcastle United and Championship rivals Brighton and Hove Albion are considering a sensational move for Frank Lampard.

He’s the third ageing former England international, along with both Steven Gerrard and Michael Carrick, to be touted as a potential target on Tyneside in recent weeks.

The report claims top brass at St. James’ Park see the Chelsea legend as a potentially inspirational figure should they win promotion back into the top tier, despite the fact he will soon turn 39.

Rafa Benitez worked with him during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge, though Lampard is reportedly in favour of a move to the south coast.

Having spent pretty much his whole career in London, a return to that area upon leaving New York City at the end of the campaign is said to be his preference right now.

While these sort of signings do not hint at the long-term project Benitez is undertaking in Newcastle, links with the veteran trio do perhaps hint the Spaniard is looking to bring in experienced heads.
