Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow says that striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has the ability to inspire his teammates both with his attitude and in his performances.

The Serbian was given only his second league start of the season in the 2-1 win over Preston North End at the weekend.

The 22-year old has been kept out of the first team picture by top goalscorer Dwight Gayle who was injured for the match at Deepdale on Saturday. Darlow told the Chronicle that the Magpies did miss Gayle but it was great to have another striker in Mitro contributing goals as well:

“He definitely does gee us all up. He’s come into the team against Preston in the cup and scored two there, then another two against the same team at Deepdale to win us the game.”

“Obviously we’ve missed [Dwight] Gayle, who’s been in terrific form as well, but it’s nice to have two strikers scoring goals. Then, at the back, we’re complementing them really well by keeping clean sheets and putting in solid performances.”

It will be interesting to see how manager Rafa Benitez manages the situation as the season progresses if both forwards continue to score goals.

There is no prospect of the team switching to 4-4-2 according to the Magpies boss so both players will have to make do with the game time they are given, although that shouldn’t be a problem with the sheer number of games in the Championship.

Mitrovic was a big money summer signing last summer and has been in fine fettle of late, emerging as a much-needed cult hero amongst the St. James’ Park faithful since joining from Anderlecht.
