The current Kilmarnock manager is hopeful that Newcastle will return to the top flight at the first attempt and he told the Chronicle that he believes that it will lead to better times for the club:
“I know one thing – when the club do get back up, and hopefully it’s at the first attempt, because of Rafa Benitez’s standing in the game – Newcastle United will be challenging for the top players in the world again.”
As the club slid closer and closer to relegation from the top flight over the last few seasons they largely operated in the French market, with many signing made under previous regimes struggling to get off the ground.
Things are looking good for an instant return to the top flight after being relegated last campaign.
The victory against Preston North End at the weekend means the Magpies are now six points ahead of the first playoff place after Huddersfield Town stayed third on 28 points following a 5-0 hammering at Craven Cottage by Fulham.
The games do however thick and fast in the Championship, and they will face strugglers Cardiff City, now under the guidance of Neil Warnock, at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
