Without wishing to convert into retirement home status the prospect of Michael Carrick joining Newcastle has increased.

The former Wallsend Boys Club prospect is out of contract at the end of the season and looks unlikely to be offered a new deal by Jose Mourinho.

Since he broke through at West Ham there has always been rumours of a return to the north east but at the age of 35 that ambition may be about to become reality.

The prospect of a Steven Gerrard- Carrick midfield duo is probably best avoided but there can be little doubt that under the right management the Manchester United man could have a big influence over younger, impressionable team mates

Asked about life beyond Old Trafford Carrick told Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail): “There’s always a chance of that isn’t there?’

I’m 35 now and need to be realistic. It is such a great club with great players, you can’t take it for granted and thankfully I’m here this season and playing my part.

Hopefully I can play more of a part in the months ahead, strive for success and try to get some sort of silverware, because winning trophies is why we are here.”

Carrick has made three Premier League appearances for Manchester United this season and started in the 3-1 win at Swansea before the international break.
