Between the lines with that Steven Gerrard interview

If yesterday’s interview with LA Galaxy TV is anything to go by we can brace ourselves for weeks of speculation over the future of Steven Gerrard.

It seems that there is a triangle of interest in the former Liverpool skipper stretching from Anfield, north of the border to Celtic Park then over to St James’ Park and back to Merseyside.

The common denominator for all three clubs is the Liverpool link of Rafa Benitez, Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

Very few people know the extent of Gerrard’s relationship with those three managers while a contract with BT Sport adds another complication to the situation.

When he left Liverpool in May 2015 Gerrard penned an emotional message saying that he wouldn’t play against Liverpool but he wouldn’t be the first legendary figure to do damage against a former love- Dennis Law and Frank Lampard spring to mind.

A deal with Rafa, FA Cup draw permitting, would put that issue on the back burner, and give the club a welcome January boost when the going tends to get tougher in the 46 match marathon.

Playing reports from LA haven’t been too favourable with the old box to box midfielder evolving rapidly into a minder patrolling in front of the back four.

On reasonable wages, with a coaching remit and relocating to the area Gerrard would be a great asset to the club as it looks towards promotion and some Premier League stability.

Whether that happens remains to be seen with the farewell interview complicating rather than clearing the picture as we wait to find out what happens next in the Gerrard files.
