The memory of Gary Speed will be honoured on Sunday as Newcastle visit Leeds United a week ahead of the fifth anniversary of his tragic death.

Speed played in more than 400 matches for the two clubs and is fondly remembered by both sets of supporters for his ability and honesty on and off the park.

Members of his family will be in attendance at Elland Road with this year being particularly poignant with Wales reaching the semi-finals of the European Championships in France.

Speed is credited with kick starting the current batch of Welsh internationalists with Aaron Ramsey appointed captain in his first competitive match in charge, against England three months before his death.

Kenny Dalglish brought Speed to St James’ Park in 1998 after agreeing a £5.5m transfer fee with Everton, he made 213 appearances for the club before moving on to Bolton Wanderers six years later.

At Leeds Speed is warmly remembered for coming through the youth ranks and playing in all but one of the league matches in season 91/92 as Howard Wilkinson’s side won the final Football League Championship.
