Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has hailed the impact of striker Dwight Gayle in recent matches for the Magpies.

The £10.5million signing from Crystal Palace scored another two goals against Barnsley last night in a 2-0 win that sent Newcastle top of the Championship, and the Magpies boss believes the striker’s ability to put in the hard yards, as well as scoring goals, has been extremely beneficial for the team. He is quoted by the Chronicle as saying:

“We knew that he could score goals. We were impressed in the beginning because he scored goals in the training sessions. He is working hard and it’s not easy to see both things at the same time, goals and work. He is enjoying himself and doing really well.”

Newcastle are the Championship’s top goalscorers with 27 goals from 13 matches, with Gayle providing almost half of them with eleven so far this season. The Magpies will be hoping the forward’s hot streak continues with the games coming thick and fast in the division.

Newcastle face Ipswich Town at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon. The Tractor Boys will be coming off a morale boosting 2-0 victory against Burton Albion last night, but their two goals in the match were their first in five games so we can expect a tight affair at the weekend.
