Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez does not believe it would help the Magpies to play two up front in future matches despite the form of both Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitrovic followed up his double against Preston North End in the EFL Cup on Tuesday with another brace against the same opponent in the league on Saturday but he only started at Deepdale at the weekend after an injury to top goalscorer Dwight Gayle. When asked about the potential of the pair striking up a partnership up front, Rafa says he would be reluctant to change a system which has seen the Magpies take six wins from six in October. He told the Chronicle:

“If they score two goals, each one every time that they play, I’m not too worried about playing one at a time. Maybe the other one can score two goals and I’ll be happy with that. No-one can guarantee that if you play with two strikers you will be much better. So we are quite good now, and we will keep enjoying this situation.”

It looks likely then that either Mitrovic or a fit again Gayle will start alone up front against Cardiff City next weekend. It would be unfair to drop Mitrovic after scoring two braces in a row and it could be more likely that the Serbian will start again at St James’ Park on Saturday.
