Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has denied he has a problem with Neil Warnock after he was appointed as Cardiff City manager, and declared that player performances are more important than personality clashes between managers.

Warnock has said in the past that he was emailed by the Magpies boss with a threat to sue him but when asked by the Chronicle about the former Rotherham manager’s appointment, Rafa chose not to be drawn on the subject:

“I don’t have any problems [with him]. I want my players beating the other players. The managers don’t count.”

Benitez did however wish former Magpies boss Steve McClaren well in his new job at Derby County. McClaren took charge of his first match in the 1-0 win over Leeds at the weekend, 17 months after he was sacked by the Rams in his first spell at the iPro stadium.

Newcastle will face Cardiff at St James Park at the start of next month, and we will find out then whether relations between Warnock and the Newcastle manager have thawed.
