Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has defended his rotation policy ahead of tonight’s match against Barnsley.

The Spaniard has been accused of changing a winning team too often by some critics, including former Newcastle full back Olivier Bernard, but at his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Magpies boss justified his team selection. He is quoted by the Shields Gazette as saying:

“It’s not that I rotate for the sake of rotating. We are always analysing, and on Saturday, we looked and some players came from back from international breaks. They had been far away and worked hard. When the team is doing well, we don’t change too much. “If we change, we have to make sure the player who comes in is right.”

Benitez is expected to rotate his team once again with some tipping both Mohamed Diame and Aleksandar Mitrovic to make starts at Oakwell. The Newcastle manager also confirmed at the press conference that both striker Daryl Murphy and goalkeeper Rob Elliot are back in training after injury.

Elliot’s return is particularly significant as he has been sidelined with a knee injury since the end of March, and may soon be in contention to fight for the number one jersey alongside current first choice Karl Darlow and former number one Matz Sels.
