Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow says he found it hard to take that he wasn’t chosen ahead of Matz Sels at the start of the season but after starting the last three matches, he is determined to make the most of it.

The 26 year old told the Shields Gazette that he is totally focused on getting the Magpies promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking:

“It was tough at the start, but now I’m in, I’m happy that I’m playing and the team is doing well. All I want to do is make sure this team gets back in the Premier League. The whole club is pulling in the same direction. We want to get promoted and we want to play well and get a lot of points.”

Darlow had an inauspicious return to first team action against Norwich City, conceding three goals in a dramatic 4-3 win at St James’ Park. He however kept a clean sheet in his next match against Rotherham United before conceding a Scott Hogan goal against Brentford on Saturday.

Newcastle boss Rafa benitez confirmed yesterday that Rob Elliot has returned to full training so Darlow will have yet another rival for his starting spot to compete with in the coming weeks. He will however expect to keep his place in goal against Barnsley tonight.
